It's National Apprenticeship Week!

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is a nationwide celebration to showcase the opportunities that Registered Apprenticeships offer for Americans to develop workplace experience and skills that employers value. In honor of the 85th Anniversary of the National Apprenticeship Act, the U.S. Department of Labor is hosting the 8th Annual National Apprenticeship Week (NAW)! This year’s NAW will take place November 14-20, 2022, at hundreds of events across the country. These events give leaders in business, labor, workforce, education and other critical industries the opportunity to showcase their Registered Apprenticeship programs, apprentices, and facilities to career seekers in their local communities. Additionally, apprentices have a platform to share their apprenticeship experience and how it has transformed their lives.

For over 25 years, Maryland Correctional Enterprises' parternship with Bea Gaddy Family Centers helped feed those in need in the Greater Baltimore Metropolitan area. Bea Gaddy, a name many in Baltimore are familiar with, was not only a Baltimore City Council Member but an advocate for those in need. This partnership is part of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Service's restorative justice project -- giving individuals the opportunity to give back to the community.

Preparing Returning Citizens for Reentry

Maryland Correctional Enterprises (MCE) focuses on preparing incarcerated individuals for re-entry, which refers to the process of planning to be released from jail or prison and returning to local communities. Reentry has become quite a buzz word utilized by many agencies. Despite enormous monetary and personnel investments into this field, there is still confusion about what might be needed, required, or possible. Maryland has recruited many players for teams whose sole goal is to pave the way for parolees to have a life outside the fence.

Six years ago, I was fortunate enough to join the wonderful team at Maryland Correctional Enterprises (MCE) and enter a world I admittingly knew very little about. As the daughter of a police officer and an extremely paranoid mother, you can imagine their excitement when I called home to tell them I had gotten a job in the prison system…
